‘Pound for the Guy’ plea to save fireworks watched by 80,000

The council says the free show, one of the biggest and most popular in London, could fall victim to the budget cuts unless it can raise tens of thousands of pounds.
The borough's elected mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, called on everyone who hopes to watch the Bonfire Night display to give not a penny for the Guy but £1. More than 80,000 watched last year's event, hosted jointly by Lewisham and Greenwich.
A council statement announcing the appeal today said: "Council funding for events like this has come under intense pressure as government cuts begin to bite. The Mayor of Lewisham is asking pyrotechnophiles all over London to join him by digging into their pockets to ensure that the Blackheath fireworks don't end up as damp squibs this year."
Sir Steve added: "Money is tight as we all know. But I don't want to see this event cancelled without giving people the chance to show their support. Just £1 each from everyone who attends would ensure that the skies sparkle as usual over the heath this year."
