The royal Army officer is on the final leg of his troop leader training. Based at Warminster, Wiltshire, he is learning armoured tactics and taking part in exercises commanding troops.
When he completes the course early next month, the Prince will return to the Household Cavalry Regiment barracks at Windsor.
Eventually, Harry, who holds the rank of Cornet in the Blues and Royals, will take charge of 11 soldiers and four Scimitar tanks. "He is still training at Warminster. He will probably have a few beers in the mess with his mates," one aide said of Harry's plans for his birthday.
Conflict zone
Harry, who has been dating girlfriend Chelsy Davy for some time, is set on seeing action on the front line. He could be serving in a conflict zone by the end of the year, with both Iraq and Afghanistan being touted as possible destinations.
Two Household Cavalry soldiers were killed in Afghanistan last month after being ambushed by the Taliban. The attack happened during a reconnaissance patrol, the job Harry would have to do if he were sent to the region.
Harry, third in line to the throne, was born Prince Henry Charles Albert David at 4.20pm, weighing 6lb 14oz, on September 15, 1984.
