Prince Philip's Diana letters 'stolen'

Private letters sent by Prince Philip to Princess Diana may have been stolen, an inquest jury heard today.

Coroner Lord Justice Scott Baker told the inquest into the deaths in 1997 of the princess and Dodi Fayed that it was possible the correspondence could have been taken from Diana's secret chest. He said it was up to the jury to consider the "mystery".

He said although Diana's sister Lady Sarah McCorquodale was "certain" no such letters existed, Diana's butler Paul Burrell claimed they did. The coroner told the jury: "There is an issue relating to letters from Prince Philip. It seems possible that there were such letters but where they went and whether they still exist remains a mystery.

"We shall have to see whether the mystery unfolds in the coming weeks and you will have to consider whether they did and if so what significance is to be attached to the evidence."

The High Court inquest heard that early in 1998, Lady Sarah agreed to open a chest where the letters were supposed to have been kept. But Lady Sarah claimed no letters from Prince Philip had been kept and believes they did not exist.
