He owns 2,300 shops in the UK and controls 12 per cent of the UK clothing retail market, second only to Marks & Spencer. Knighted in 2006.

Has been tied to ITV in a three-year "golden handcuffs" deal worth about £20 million. An even bigger star in the US where he will be a judge on American Idol until 2010, earning a reported £20 million per series. His US hit, America's Got Talent, has been sold to 80 countries. Cowell earlier worked in the music industry, with artists such as Sinitta and Westlife.
