Protesters arrested as as Dutch Right-winger Geert Wilders visits
05 March 2010
Mr Wilders arrived in Britain today after overturning a ban on him entering the UK. A protest supporting him was arranged by the self-styled "counter-jihad" English Defence League. But a counter-protest in Millbank ended up with several demonstrators being arrested. Protesters chanted "shame on you" as police led several members of the crowd into vans.
Mr Wilders, 46, attempted to enter in February last year but was detained at Heathrow and told to fly back to Holland three hours later. He had been due to show his anti-Islamic film Fitna, which criticises the Koran as a "fascist book", at the House of Lords. But the Freedom Party leader has since had the ban quashed and was today showing the film to MPs and peers as a guest of UK Independence Party leader Lord Pearson and crossbencher Baroness Cox.
Lord Pearson has condemned radical, expansionist Islam as a "world domination movement". A Home Office spokesman said it regretted the decision by Baroness Cox and Lord Pearson to invite Mr Wilders to the Lords.
