Protesters to fight mini C-charge for Greenwich

Campaigners are rallying against plans to set up a mini congestion charging zone in southeast London.

The scheme is being considered as a way of easing traffic jams in Greenwich town centre before an influx of residents from thousands of new homes on Greenwich peninsula.

Transport for London has been carrying out studies on "road traffic demand management" for Greenwich council.

It is feared this could result in tolls of between £2 and £6 a day within the area bounded by the A2 and A102, including Greenwich Park, or even a levy on the Blackwall tunnel, although nothing has been confirmed.

A protest meeting organised by the Association of British Drivers is to be held on Saturday in an attempt to build opposition to the plans.

Association spokesman Roger Lawson said a charging zone would have a massive knock-on effect and cause traffic to divert through Bexley and Lewisham.

He said: "We don't want to be reactive to any proposal. We want to get out there and start the war.

"This campaign is going to run and run. We need to alert people to what is proposed and what the implications are.

"We are against all forms of road pricing. Greenwich is just another stupid place they want to bring it in." A Greenwich spokeswoman said the volume of traffic in the borough was the issue most often raised with the council.

"It is therefore important for us to address it and to that end, with the support of TfL, we have been considering options for reducing traffic through the A206 corridor.

"This includes options, including charging, which can inform a thorough debate with local residents and businesses."

She stressed: "The council has made no decision and will not do so in advance of understanding the impact of any proposal on business and the views of local residents."

Saturday's meeting will be at Mycenae House, Mycenae Road, Greenwich, starting at 11am.
