Protests at London Bridge over Southern service cuts

Angry commuters were today demonstrating at London Bridge station over "disgraceful cuts" which will lead to worse services for thousands of train passengers.

Southern rail company is slashing by a third the number of services to several stations in the south-east of the capital. The cuts come just a few months after the firm had its franchise renewed amid vows to improve services.

The company claims passengers at the stations affected, which include Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill and Sydenham, can use the new East London line instead when it opens next year. But campaigners say the new line does not go into the centre of London.

Michael Abrahams of the Forest Hill Society, which organised the protest, said: "Southern are making cuts to save money and make life easier for themselves."

Commuter Barry Milton, from Sydenham, added: "It's like shutting down the M1."
