Pupils 'don't need social engineering'

Ministers must stamp out "social engineering" in university admissions because working-class pupils can gain places on their own merits, it has been claimed.

A study has found they are just as likely to land degree course places as middle-class pupils with the same A-level grades.

Ministers have pressed universities to drive up their intake of working-class students, prompting fears that this has been at the expense of deserving middle-class applicants.

But a study by the Higher Education Policy Institute has showed that three-quarters of students with grades ABB or better at A-level go on to university, regardless of their family background.

Working-class students only take a smaller share of places at university because they are less likely to gain good grades in their GCSEs and A-levels, the report said.

It added: "It cannot be emphasised too strongly that it is differential school achievement that determines differential participation in higher education. Social class is not the issue here. The disparity of entry to higher education simply reflects differences in school achievement."
