Former Quins chairman Ian Lenegan bought Dave Whelan's 89 per cent majority share in Wigan last October but retained his 65 per cent stake in the London side.
In most sports, such an arrangement would be a conflict of interest given that both play in the same competition but the Rugby Football League sanctioned the deal.
The governing body, who are desperate for a franchise to prosper in the capital, have given Lenegan two years to severe his ties with Quins. Lenegan's successor as Quins' chairman, Keith Hogg, praised the Wigan-born businessman's contribution to the club. He added: "We're fortunate he will continue to be an investor in the club, although the players will want to beat Wigan that little more than usual."
Lenegan said: "It's not an ideal opener. I'd have preferred anyone other than Quins."
Coach Brian McDermott has added six new players to his squad. New captain Rob Purdham said: "We're at home and we want to get the season off to a good start."
INS AND OUTS AT QUINS
INS: Gareth Haggarty (Salford), Dwayne Barker (Castleford), Danny Ward (Hull KR), David Howell (Canberra), Lamont Bryan, Will Sharp (promoted from the youth academy).
OUTS: Paul Sykes (Bradford), Lee Hopkins (retired), Tyrone Smith (Brumbies rugby union), David Mills (Hull KR), Andy Smith (Halifax), Stephen Bannister (Salford).
