Queen axe scare: man is charged

A man has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon after he was seen with a pickaxe yards from where the Queen was due to begin a walkabout.

The 34-year-old was arrested when he was spotted acting suspiciously 30 minutes before the Queen and Prince Philip were due in St George's Square, Huddersfield.

Royal protection officers and police swooped to arrest a man shortly before the Queen and Prince Philip arrived.

Police are thought to have been tipped off by a member of the crowd awaiting the royal walkabout in St George's Square, yards from where the man was standing.

He was surrounded and handcuffed after a brief struggle. The man protested at his treatment as he was led away.
