Quiet revolution as wind turbine is put up at children's theatre

A theatre is set to become Britain's first arts venue to be powered entirely by wind.

The Colour House Children's Theatre in Merton Abbey Mills has installed an unusual new five-metrehigh turbine.

Called the Quietrevolution, the turbine has three S-shaped blades and operates silently. Theatre bosses hope it will provide enough power for the 70-seat building, which is Grade II listed.

Doug Stewart of Green Energy UK, which donated the turbine to the theatre, said: "New generation wind turbines are a major stride in the right direction. They're quiet, look great and produce good amounts of renewable power, meaning they are ideal for use in urban areas.

"They are the perfect response to the critics of wind turbines and are just what we need as we learn to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels."

Colour House director Peter Wallder said: "Electricity costs theatres a lot of money when you think of all the lighting, effects and heating that go into productions, so thanks to Green Energy UK the electricity bill for us is now non-existent."
