Race against time to save Olympic Park stray cats

Workers clearing the Olympic Park have had to combat Japanese knotweed, an unexploded bomb and contaminated soil. But one problem they did not envisage was a plague of feral cats.

Nearly 150 strays have been found on the 800-acre site in Stratford, but animal rescuers fear there are many more who could be killed by a giant earthwork machine for decontaminating soil.

Volunteers from the Celia Hammond Animal Trust are caring for 147 cats and kittens they tempted out of hiding with food.

The Olympic Delivery Authority allowed the volunteers onto the site for a few weeks but now access to most of it has been restricted. Ms Hammond has launched a petition calling for the rescuers to be allowed back. More than 1,500 people have signed.

"We were originally called in by the authority," said the former supermodel. "I cannot understand how they can prevent us from rescuing more cats."

Volunteers are allowed on the part of the site where businesses still operate.

The Olympic Delivery Authority said: "This is a construction site with a huge amount of vehicle movement and demolition. Health and safety is our number-one priority.

"We've been working closely with the animal trust and have no reported evidence of more cats on site."

To adopt a kitten, ring the trust on 020 7474 8811.
