Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue could end after death of Humphrey Lyttelton

The Radio 4 favourite I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue could be cancelled after the death of Humphrey Lyttelton.

The 86-year-old presenter died following heart surgery on Friday.

The show, which began 36 years ago, still regularly attracts audiences of more than two million.

But BBC insiders fear it cannot carry on without Lyttelton's unique presenting style.

The spring series has been cancelled and it is not clear whether it will ever return.

Panellist Barry Cryer confirmed yesterday that the series has been postponed indefinitely.

He said: "Obviously we are not going ahead with the series that we had planned for the near future. Whether it is for good we don't know. It's too early to say."

Last year another veteran panellist, Tim Brooke-Taylor, said: "Humph is the most important component. Willie Rushton [founder panelist who died in 1996] and I talked about it once and we agreed that if Humph isn't there it's not worth doing."

Humphrey Lyttelton: Unique style

Described by the BBC as a "champion of silliness", Lyttelton specialised in double-entendres, many of which centred around Samantha, the show's fictitious scorer.

He chaired the game show since its inception in 1972, and also had successful careers as a jazz trumpeter, cartoonist and journalist.
