Rail firms say no free travel for Met police

02 October 2008
Union bosses have launched a campaign for Met officers to travel free to help to cut crime.
But the mainline rail operators - who each make tens of millions of pounds a year profit - say they already pay enough by providing a 50 per cent discount on travel for Met and City of London officers and that if they pay any more they would have to put fares up for commuters.
Bob Crow, leader of the RMT union - largest of the rail unions - is demanding the free-travel scheme and said: "Free travel for police officers was introduced to help stop the rise in attacks on transport staff and it does help. Every Met officer who uses free travel on buses, Tubes and trains intervenes on average three times a year to stop or prevent trouble."
He added: "It is clear that ending the scheme would result in more transport workers and members of the public being attacked."
