Ramos tells cup finalists it's time to buy

Tottenham manager Juande Ramos has told the club they must show more ambition if he is to turn them into a team capable of challenging the top four.

Spurs may have booked their place in the Carling Cup Final with one of their greatest performances following the 5-1 win over Arsenal in the semi-final second leg, but Ramos believes there is still a lot of work to do to make the squad good enough to compete with the Premier League elite.

The Spaniard is determined to bring in fresh talent and is close to a deal for Juventus' former Chelsea midfielder Tiago as well as Rangers defender Alan Hutton.

A number of players are fighting for their futures at the club, with keeper Paul Robinson, right-back Pascal Chimbonda and left-back Young Pyo-Lee expected to leave. Ramos said: "Everyone involved with the club has to convince themselves that we deserve more, we have to be ambitious and say, 'We are going to take that step forward'. The club has the potential to achieve this. Once this mindset has been achieved we can look long term.

"Our short-term objective is to save the season because the situation that we encountered upon our arrival at the club was very complicated, with the club in the relegation zone following a poor run.

"We seem to have overcome the period of anxiety that we were going through and we are situated in mid-table. "We still have roughly half a season left to try and climb up the league table. We are fighting for three cups and want to progress as far as possible. Those are our short term goals."

Club officials are believed to be in Italy to conclude negotiations with Juventus over Tiago but the former Chelsea midfielder is still in need of some convincing, especially as he wants £55,000-a-week.

Hutton is still wavering over his move and played and scored for Rangers in their 6-0 win over East Stirling last night.

After the game, assistant manager Ally McCoist insisted the Scottish international defender was "going nowhere" but Spurs are confident that a third bid of £8m will be enough to finally get their man.
