Five years ago there were only three breeding pairs in the capital, but frequent sightings suggest that this number has increased significantly.

One bird surprised a Woodford Green couple when it flew into their garden and sat in a willow tree. It was filmed by Bob and Sally Allen. "We were having dinner when we saw it. It was big - about 50cm tall," said Mr Allen.

The RSPB identified it as a sparrowhawk by the white spots on its back.

Spokesman Tim Webb said: "It's good news. A lot's been done for the environment, which is paying dividends."
