Latest figures reveal the station had 5.65 million listeners in the last quarter to September, compared to 6.1 million in the previous three months and 5.87 million thistime last year.
However, the BBC's listener figures are up overall, with 32.89 million people tuning in to its stations in the quarter, compared to 32.65 million at the same time last year.
The Five Live slump comes at a bad time for the corporation, which is facing job losses and budget cuts.
But a spokesman said: "The station is in good health overall and breakfast with Nicky Campbell is doing well."
