The Mayor promised to deliver a raft of measures aimed at getting the 300 affected businesses up and running as soon as possible.

Although the size of the package is not immediately known, it is likely to run into hundreds of thousands of pounds after insurance experts estimated the repair bill could top £30 million.

Precise details of the recovery package are now being finalised, with traders unsure whether the help will include temporary cuts in business rates, financial help to replenish damaged stock, or rebuilding the gutted premises.

Announcing the package, Mr Livingstone said: "It is essential we get the market up and running, as soon as is safe to do so, with the businesses that have made Camden Market a huge success."

It emerged that 15 businesses may not be able to return to the market until next year.
