Removal men start packing up for the Blairs to leave Downing Street

The removal men have started work in Downing Street ahead of Tony Blair's departure from office and from the flat above the shop.

A van was parked at the back of the Prime Minister's residence, where it is understood that the Blair family's possessions are being packed up ahead of his planned resignation on June 27.

Mr Blair and his wife Cherie bought a new home at Connaught Square near Marble Arch in 2004, where they are expected to live after he quits as Prime Minister.

However, reports suggest that building work is still going on at the townhouse, which cost £3.6 million, and it is unclear whether they will be able to move in immediately.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "There is a removal van at the back of Downing Street. It is for the Prime Minister."

Although 10 Downing Street is the Prime Minister's official residence, Mr Blair and his family have lived at Number 11 since 1997, when Chancellor Gordon Brown agreed to occupy the flat above Number 10 and allow the Blairs to have the more spacious home next door.
