Renew season tickets now and beat the price rises

On Friday 2 January rail, Tube and bus peak-time fares will increase by an inflation busting average of six per cent - though some rail fares in the South-East will increase by eight per cent. Off-peak rail fares will increase by up to 11 per cent.
Sharon Grant, chairwoman of the watchdog London TravelWatch, said in some cases passengers could beat the increase by renewing season tickets now. This applies particularly when an annual season is due for renewal in January.
With many annual season tickets increasing by hundreds of pounds it can prove worth losing a few days' travel and buy the new ticket at the old rate.
Ms Grant said: "If passengers renew their annual tickets before then they will, at least, hold off the above-inflation rises for a year. It really is worth researching the way you travel to ensure your are getting the best possible deal."
Fares are particularly complex within and around the London area.
TfL is introducing a daytime off-peak fare. TravelWatch advises that passengers who use a Travelcard in the morning peak (6.30am-9.30am) and return before 4.30pm or after 7pm regularly on the Tube, DLR, or London Overground should switch to Oyster Pay As You Go which works out cheaper.
