Revealed: First picture INSIDE the Portuguese holiday apartment where Madeleine vanished

Photographs from inside the Portuguese holiday apartment where Madeleine McCann disappeared have been released for the first time.

The bedroom where she slept now lies empty, a crime scene.

Its narrow beds have been stripped of their sheets so they can be analysed for evidence.

Stripped bare: The apartment where Madeleine vanished

The two-bedroom apartment in the Algarve has been at the heart of the six-month investigation. It is where Kate and Gerry McCann last saw their daughter, and where Mrs McCann first realised she was missing.

Last month detectives returned to stage a re-enactment of different theories in the case and the blue woollen blanket which they passed through a window to recreate an abduction lies clearly visible on the bed.

In the hours after the four-year-old disappeared police failed to seal off the flat and up to 50 people swarmed through it.

Analysts have warned that DNA samples from the flat have been contaminated by ash from officers' cigarettes.

Without a breakthrough, Mr and Mrs McCann could remain official suspects for 15 years or more. The couple were named as arguidos in September, and have spoken of their hope that the status will be lifted soon.

But Francisco Pagarete, a lawyer for Robert Murat, 33, the only other arguido, said: "It is clear that they have no evidence against him.

"But we realise the status may not be lifted. The fear is that the Policia Judiciaria are winding down the inquiry and that this may never be properly resolved."

The McCanns yesterday prayed for their daughter at a Remembrance Day service near their home in Rothley, Leicestershire. A fellow worshipper said they looked "very calm and composed".
