Scandal: England players Topsy Ojo and Mike Brown, pictured together during the New Zealand tour, have been found guilty of misconduct
Lurid details of how two England rugby stars slept with the same woman after an all-night bar crawl in New Zealand were revealed yesterday.
A devastating report by the Rugby Football Union said both full-back Mike Brown and winger Topsy Ojo had sex with the 18-year-old waitress after England were defeated by the All Blacks last month.
Brown and Ojo, both aged 22, were found guilty of misconduct by RFU disciplinary officer Jeff Blackett and fined £500 and £1,000 respectively.
The report said their hard drinking and behaviour was 'inconsistent with the life of an elite professional rugby player in the modern era'.
The other player named in Mr Blackett's report as having been under investigation over claims the woman had been sexually assaulted, scrum half Danny Care, was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Mr Blackett's report also made clear for the first time that the woman had made an allegation of sexual misconduct both at the hospital where she was treated and to police.
Previously it was understood that it was her boyfriend who had made a complaint.
The report confirmed that four members of the team had been accused of 'sexually violating' the woman after England's match in Auckland on June 14.
But it stated she had not made a formal allegation to police because she did not want to 'go through the criminal process'.
It said detectives had wanted to speak to Brown, Ojo and Care and another player Mr Blackett refused to name.
All the players strenuously deny the allegations. Brown and Ojo had met the waitress in a bar in Auckland, the report said.
Both men kissed her during visits to another two clubs before heading back to their Hilton Hotel base at 7am.
Inquiry: Ojo (far left) and Brown (second from right) with David Strettle and Danny Care in New Zealand. Strettle and Care were cleared in the probe into the alleged scandal
Once there the woman agreed to visit Brown – who admitted to having earlier been a 'bit tipsy' – in his room and the pair had sex.
Meanwhile Ojo went to his own room, leaving the pair together. An hour later Ojo knocked on Brown's door to remind him he had an 8.15am physiotherapist's appointment and he was late.
After Brown had left the room Ojo had sex with the woman. While Ojo was in the room with the woman, Care and winger David Strettle – who Blackett separately confirmed was never someone the police wanted to interview – 'looked in' to remind him he had to be in the hotel foyer for a swimming pool rehab session at 9am.
The report said Strettle and Care stood at the door for 'no more than a few seconds'.
Other members of the tour party later saw the woman leaving the hotel and said she was not in distress or crying.
Later the same day she went to a hospital in Auckland where doctors treating her injuries referred her to the police.
But Mr Blackett stressed she had made no formal complaint and there was no evidence of 'any illegal activity'.
He added: 'All the players I have interviewed vehemently deny any criminal wrongdoing and I have seen or heard no evidence which has been tested to gainsay those denials.'
Brown, who plays for Harlequins, was fined for staying out all night and arriving late for the session with the physiotherapist.
Ojo, who plays for London Irish, was fined for staying out all night.
Mr Blackett said: 'No doubt in the past England players on tour have stayed out too late, drunk excessive quantities of alcohol, invited guests back to the team hotel and missed physiotherapist appointments or training the next morning.
'But such activity is now inconsistent with the life of an elite professional rugby player in the modern era and with membership of a team seeking to be the best in the world.'
THE PENALTIES
The two players reprimanded by RFU disciplinary officer Jeff Blackett:
- Mike Brown – fined £1,000. Reprimanded and found guilty of misconduct in that he stayed out all night during an England rugby tour and was thereby late for a physiotherapist appointment. In addition he put himself in a position where allegations could be made against him and I warn him to be careful in the future not to put himself in any compromising situations which may lead him to bringing the game into disrepute.
- Topsy Ojo – fined £500. Reprimanded and found guilty of misconduct in that he stayed out all night during an England rugby tour. In addition he put himself in a position where allegations could be made against him and I warn him to be careful in the future not to put himself in any compromising situations which may lead him to bringing the game into disrepute.
