Riot police clear protesters from barricaded Acropolis

More than 100 culture ministry workers shut down the 2,500-year-old temple yesterday, complaining they were owed 22 months' back pay.
The protesters barricaded themselves inside, padlocked the gates and refused to allow tourists in until their demands were met.
Police in riot gear arrived after a court ruled the protesters were hindering access. "Riot police and violence won't break the strike," they chanted, clinging to the entrance gates.
But police got in through a side entrance, then used pepper spray to clear the protesters as bemused tourists looked on. At least one protester was arrested.
"We think this is a shame," said Veronica Traverso, an Argentinian tourist outside the padlocked gates. "We are not to blame for Greece's troubles."
Greece has cut public workers' salaries and pensions in an effort to deal with its massive deficit.
