The official dress code for those invited to an investiture at Buckingham Palace is lounge suit, morning coat or uniform.
Rod Stewart obviously chose to go with the third option.
For the ceremony yesterday the 62-year-old squeezed into the regulation old rocker outfit of drainpipe trousers, with a skull-and-crossbones tie and two-tone brogues.
Of course, it being the palace and all, the trousers were £250 Ralph Lauren and he wore a £800 Dolce and Gabbana blazer.

And while his wife of four weeks, Penny, went for a hell-raising leopard print, it was on a £700 Dolce and Gabbana chiffon wrap dress, teamed with £370 Jimmy Choo heels.
The model, 36, confessed to having a lump in her throat as she watched her husband receive his CBE for five decades of service to the music industry from the Prince of Wales.
Stewart himself described the honour as "very cool", although, he joked "we had to sit for what seemed like hours waiting while this wonderful orchestra played the most incredible medley of songs - none of them mine".
Lancaster towered above the 62-year-old star at the ceremony.

Hang on, I can't keep up at my age Penny
The veteran rocker, 62, recently dismissed reports that he was retiring after a gruelling US tour.
But he certainly looked like he's trying hard to keep up with Penny as they arrived at the Serpentine Gallery's Summer Party.
Lancaster, 36, showed off her long legs in a gold minidress - curiously combined as a bra - while her husband dressed his age in pinstripes.
