Police think the victims were killed by a "collector" who then pieced them together, and are searching hundreds of missing person files for clues.

The skeleton was discovered in 2007 but police thought it belonged to a single mugging victim. Forensic scientists have now established that it is made from the bones of three women and two men, all aged between 25 and 55 and who died between the mid-Eighties and 2006.

Officers found the body at a blaze on wasteland with a wallet and keys belonging to a 77-year-old man, Libero Ricci. Pathologists at Rome's La Sapienza university established that the bones were not his - and that DNA in the skull was that of a female relative.
