Royal Borough is the worst place to die, says NHS care study

In a study of care for terminally ill patients, charity Dignity in Dying found the local primary care trust spent the least on caring for people at the end of their lives.
The charity said trusts across London were failing to make such care a priority and there was a postcode lottery, with some spending more than others on support.
Using the Freedom of Information Act, it obtained information for 31 trusts. On average they spent less than half a per cent of their budgets on support for dying patients. Some trusts with huge cash surpluses are spending the least and funding in many trusts has fallen in the past year.
Last month, Gordon Brown pledged to double investment in end-of-life care but more than half of complaints received by the NHS concern care for the dying.
Sarah Wootton, chief executive of Dignity in Dying, warned that more people would spend their last days in distress unless more funds were made available.
She said: "Every terminally ill patient should have access to good quality end-of-life care as a founding principle of patient choice. Our report highlights the fact that care of the dying in London really is a postcode lottery."
