Savoy's green makeover

The Savoy is hoping to become London's greenest hotel following its £ 100million restoration.

Due reopen in May after 15 months of work, it will have smart sensors in bedrooms that turn off lights and heating when guests leave, and an eco-friendly heating system. Low-energy air conditioning and smart meters have been installed in all rooms.

The new measures will allow the Savoy to cut electricity consumption by about half and total energy consumption by up to 40 per cent.

Gary Parke of Evolve Energy, the consultancy overseeing the project, said: "The key for the hotel was that not only did this make sense for an ecological point of view, but it made good business sense too."
