And, incredibly, 1928 was also when Frank and Anita Milford tied the knot.

The couple, who are 99 and 98 respectively, are celebrating their 79th wedding anniversary.

So happy: Frank and Anita celebrate their 79th wedding anniversary.

Mrs Milford said: "We are very happy. There is no great secret to it. We've had to work hard. It doesn't hurt to have a little argument from time to time - it livens things up."

Mr Milford added: "We're proud of what we have achieved. When we started we had very low wages but we saved and worked hard.

"The war years were tough - a bomb dropped on our house - but we have come through it. Marriage isn't what it used to be. Young people want everything too fast."

The couple on their wedding day in May 1928.

Last year husband-and-wife Bill and Eluned Jones, from Slough, claimed to be the world's longest-married living pair. They married on February 3, 1923.

Mr and Mrs Milford, from Plymouth, met at a YMCA dance and married on May 26, 1928. He worked in the dockyard. The couple, who have two children, now live in a nursing home.
