Seizures of cocaine rise by a quarter

Cocaine seizures by police and customs leapt by a quarter last year, figures revealed today.

Home Office statistics show this was due to a record number of successful raids.

There was a 26 per cent rise in cocaine seizures in 2007/8 with the drug being found 20,318 times.

The weight of cannabis found was the lowest since 1999, despite seizures jumping 20 per cent to 169,199. The overall number of successful drugs raids hit a record 217,792 — twice the 2004 level.

The report countered concerns this was due to more drugs being in circulation by saying it could be thanks to tougher policing and new cannabis laws.
