‘Sexsomniac’ cleared of assault

A man accused of sexual assault was cleared after claiming that he suffered from "sexsomnia".

Darren Greenwood, 33, said he must have assaulted the 21-year-old woman in his sleep because he could not remember doing it.

His defence in the landmark case was backed by medical experts, who said it was a clear example of the condition.

Chelmsford crown court heard that the woman, who had just met the Bethnal Green window fitter, slept in his bed after an evening out last year.

She woke up in the middle of the night to find him committing a sex act on her.

But the jury was told the last thing he recalled was giving her "a quick peck on the lips like a goodnight kiss" before waking at 11am. He told police he was "oblivious to anything".
