Hundreds of thousands of fans gathered in bars to watch their side's 2-0 defeat of Manchester United in Rome.
But the festivities turned ugly after 150,000 revellers took to the streets to celebrate the historic victory.
Thugs smashed up bus shelters and phoneboxes and hurled bottles at journalists and police.
There were violent scenes as hooligans confronted heavily armed riot police around famous Ramblas area.
Television journalists covering the celebrations live from a balcony on the Hotel Lloret, overlooking the Ramblas, were pelted with bottles and cans.
And some fans hurled cans, stones and glass bottles at police officers, who responded initially by using megaphones to call for order.
But at 1am they dispersed the crowd by charging with their batons and firing rubber bullets.
Some revellers were injured and some taken to hospital by ambulance.
A total of 153 people were treated for injuries. The arrests were for public disorder, damages and threatening police officers.
Police also had to break up several fights between drunken fans.
All over the city streetlights, public telephones, bus shelters and traffic lights were left in ruins.
A police spokesman said: "There were incidents of bottle throwing and public disorder which marred what should have been a fantastic night for the city."
