Silvio Berlusconi: Let Israel join EU

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi today said he wanted to bring Israel into the European Union.

Mr Berlusconi arrived in the country today with eight ministers for talks with their Israeli counterparts, and told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he ultimately hoped to make Israel an EU member.

Under Mr Berlusconi's leadership, Italy has become one of Israel's strongest allies in Europe. Israel has close trade ties with the EU, but has never expressed interest in joining the bloc. Mr Netanyahu praised Berlusconi as "one of Israel's greatest friends".
