Singer set for monster hit with zombie spoof

An unsigned London singer with a huge YouTube following is on course to gatecrash the top of the Christmas charts with his debut single.

Alex Day, 22, has reached number four in the midweek charts with his song Forever Yours, which has already been viewed more than 2.5 million times on YouTube.

The singer, who is originally from Hornchurch in Essex and now lives in Bow, has attracted a huge following for his video blogs, with his clips amassing more than 70 million views.

The song is an upbeat pop track. In the video, sci-fi fan Day plays both a superhero and a zombie. He said: "The theme of the song is friendship, so we just wanted to pay homage to the kind of silly videos you might make when you were young with your mates."

The record is the first he has released into the charts and was written and recorded in one day.
It was an early tip for Christmas number one before the Military Wives choir entered the fray, with their single Wherever You Are almost guaranteed to be at the summit on Sunday after huge midweek sales.

Day, a former student who now supports himself through advertising on his YouTube channel, said of the song's success: "It's very surprising and very weird. I just concentrated on writing good music and then releasing it online - I had no idea it could snowball.

"I have met the Military Wives, and they are lovely. There has never been an unsigned artist at number one, but I don't think I'll make it this time."

Day has attracted the interest of several record labels with his song which he says is just "a song people like". He added: "I went for a coffee with a big record label yesterday, but I don't know what I would get out of a record label as I've already done quite well on my own.

"I've been making videos for eight years and putting one up about once a week. I don't really do live shows as I can play to 200 people or I can put a performance up online and it will get seen by 200,000 straight away.

"I'm in it for the music, but I think people have got to know me which is maybe why the single has done well."

Day is giving part of the proceeds to volunteering charities in Zambia. The single is available to download from iTunes for 79p.
