Single mums forced to find work by Hain

Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain today set out moves to get more than 140,000 lone parents into work.

A key measure will be to force single mothers with children as young as seven to start looking for work by 2010.

Mothers of children aged 12 will have to look for work from next September.

At present, lone parents can remain on benefit until their children reach 16 and campaigners have argued the current system prevents the young from turning into "latchkey kids".
