Sites earmarked for new nuclear stations

British Energy is understood to have identified Dungeness in Kent, Bradwell in Essex, Sizewell in Suffolk and Hinkley in Somerset as the most likely areas for new nuclear power plants.
All are to be close to densely populated areas where electricity demand is high. British Energy already operates nuclear reactors at Dungeness, Hinkley and Sizewell.
Bradwell was shut down four years ago and is now controlled by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority but British Energy - which has been criticised over its ageing power plants - owns land next to the old reactor.
The company is also due to reveal how the new nuclear power stations will be protected from the threat of rising seas caused by climate change, and that National Grid will connect them to the electricity network.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown yesterday signalled his support for the nuclear industry's role by claiming it would meet Britain's energy needs in the face of global warming and concerns over oil and gas supplies from Russia and the Middle East.
In his speech to the CBI, he said: "New nuclear power stations potentially have a role to play in tackling climate change and improving energy security."
The Government is analysing the results of a second consultation on its nuclear plans after a High Court challenge by environmentalists.
Meanwhile, major infrastructure projects - such as power stations, airport terminals and wind farms - could be fasttracked within a year under a shake-up of planning laws announced today.
The changes - contained in the Planning Bill - will also take 90,000 homeowners out of the planning system by allowing them to build certain extensions and loft conversions.
An independent commission of experts will decide on major projects and public inquiries would be time-limited. The proposals follow the 14-year delay over Terminal Five at Heathrow.
