The Beautiful Beer campaign, aimed at promoting high standards in pubs, has given the White Horse in Parsons Green and The Salisbury in Covent Garden platinum status because of their high quality food, drink and service.

Another 21 pubs in London have been given gold awards by the campaign, which is run by Cask Marque and the British Beer and Pub Association.

The White Horse has long been nicknamed the Sloaney Pony because it was a key meeting point for Sloane Rangers in the Eighties. It is still popular with affluent drinkers who crowd its terrace on warm days.

The Salisbury, which was built in the 1890s, is better known for its decor than its clientele. Its original interior features mirrors, etched glass and gilded pillars and fittings.

Neil Williams, of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: "Platinum is granted to pubs that not only have a long-standing tradition of good beer but those which serve it with real passion.

"They give information on beer and have a menu that recommends what beers go with different dishes.

The gold award is based on how the pub looks after their beers and on the beers' quality."

He said the awards showed a trend for pubs beginning to match beer with food rather than just wine.

"There is an increasing realisation with customers and publicans that beer is a great accompaniment to food," said Mr Williams.

"In these times of alcohol awareness, beer is a good choice because it has a lower alcohol content and has less calories than wine. In terms of matching a drink with food, beer can be a real winner."
