Slump hits managers hardest in the capital

The recession is hitting white- collar staff harder in London than the rest of the country, new figures revealed today.

Research into job losses over the last year shows that the capital is bearing the brunt of redundancies among professionals and managers.

Nearly 13,000 white-collar jobs have gone in the past 12 months, with suburbs hit particularly hard. Croydon has suffered the worst across all sectors, with 3,590 jobs gone.

The downturn has had its greatest impact on blue-collar staff with more than 22,000 jobs gone.

However, white-collar redundancies are rising at a quicker rate.

Nationally, the number of managers and professionals on jobseeker's allowance has risen by 154 per cent over the last 12 months, from 46,700 to 118,700, compared to a 77 per cent rise for blue-collar staff.

The largest increases in professional claimants are concentrated in London, where 79,100 jobs were lost over the last year.

Sir Jeremy Beecham, vice-chairman of the Local Government Association, which compiled the figures, said: "The analysis clearly shows that different parts of the country are being affected by the recession in very different ways - even within individual regions there are marked differences as to how local areas are faring."
