Mark Sheridan and his wife arrive at the Court of Session in Scotland where they successfully pursued a libel action in 2006. Now they face a trial for perjury
They are accused of lying in court to protect Sheridan over claims he was a serial adulterer who attended a swingers' club and used drugs.
If convicted they face up to five years in jail.
Sheridan won £200,000 damages from the News of the World but the Crown Office ordered an inquiry after the trial judge concluded some witnesses must have lied.
Last night, as his wife emerged from an Edinburgh police station after six hours of questioning, Sheridan accused officers of conducting a vendetta against him.
He said: "We as a family are disgusted about the way we have been treated."
Mrs Sheridan, 44, was the star witness in her husband's libel action, insisting they were at home together at some of the times he was alleged to have been committing adultery.
She told jurors her husband would be "dead in the Clyde" if she thought he had attended swingers' clubs.
The then Scottish Socialist Party leader also denied claims he had affairs with an ex-escort girl and a former SSP worker.
A series of witnesses, including a string of SSP members, took the witness stand to give details of his alleged infidelities.
