Son of Evel Kneivel jumps over 24 trucks to beat father's record
25 May 2008
Robbie ‘Kaptain’ Knievel only just made the distance, touching down right at the tip of the landing ramp.
His father managed 115ft over 14 buses at the same venue, a theme park in Kings Island, Ohio, in 1975 in a stunt watched by more than half of the American TV audience.
Like father like son: Robbie Knievel on his 200ft leap over 24 trucks and, below, his father Evel in a practise jump over seven trucks in 1974
Robbie’s feat was greeted by wild cheers from the crowd, booming explosions and shooting flames.
The 46-year-old gave the thumbs-up after his bumpy touchdown and performed a wheelie.
‘He took a really hard shot at the landing-said Jeff Lowe, his business partner.
Evel Knievel, left, died last year. Son Robbie Knievel, right, follows in his footsteps
‘But he’s thrilled. We’re all thrilled. He was a lot more nervous about this jump than he let on.’
Before Saturday’s stunt, Robbie said he would need to reach a speed of 95mph to take off successfully. His previous record for trucks was 19.
Evel Knievel died last year at the age of 69 after suffering from failing health.
