South-east of London 'worst hit by runway expansion'

Flights over south-east London will soar under plans to expand Heathrow airport, campaigners claim.

They claimed the number of planes flying over this part of the capital will go up from 400 a day to more than 1,300 if proposals to allow take-offs and landings on both runways get the go-ahead.

The planes on the southern runway would be 1,000 ft lower than those on the northern. Currently, take-offs and landings alternate between runways but the Government wants to change this ahead of a proposed third runway.

John Stewart, the chairman of campaign group HACAN, said public consultation had centred on the west of London but "it is southeast London which will notice the biggest change. It will be like living under a sky of sound."

HACAN said Department for Transport maps showed the final landing path would start as far east as Woolwich and Bexley and fly in two parallel paths to Heathrow.

The northern flightpath would go over Greenwich, Peckham, Camberwell and Vauxhall and the southern over Blackheath, Deptford, Dulwich, Brixton, Clapham and Battersea.
