Speed limiting device tested on fleet of cars

More than 20 vehicles — including a London bus — will have devices fitted that prevent them from exceeding the speed limit anywhere inside the M25. The scheme is being overseen by Transport for London.
When vehicles reach the speed limit, no matter how hard the accelerator is depressed there is no further response. The system does not affect the brakes. Road safety experts hope that the experiment could pave the way for a nationwide system for Britain's 35 million car drivers.
In the £400,000 trial, sophisticated under-bonnet satellite equipment will ensure that each car always "knows" precisely where it is. This data will be automatically matched with an on-board digital map containing details of road speed limits.
Chris Lines, Head of TfL's London Road Safety Unit, saidthat forcing motorists to stick to speed limits would cut the number of accidents by around 10 per cent.
