Spurs stick with Jol...for now
17 September 2007
Sevilla manager Juande Ramos has told sources in Spain he is going to meet with Spurs again in the next fortnight - but he does not want to leave Spain until next summer.
Ramos remains their only target, despite reports suggesting Jurgen Klinsmann was ready to take charge at a club currently languishing just outside the relegation zone with four points from six games under Jol (left).
Ramos, 52, will be arriving in London tomorrow ahead of their Champions League game against Arsenal.
He is reported to be upset over the way he has been treated by Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nido having won two UEFA Cups in two seasons - his current contract runs out in the summer.
He came very close to accepting Tottenham's 'dizzying offer' last month but came under pressure from Del Nido to stay. Our source confirmed Ramos believes there is a good possibility he will finally move to north London next summer and is keen to meet with Tottenham to discuss it.
The Spurs fans showed their disapproval of the team's performance against arch-rivals Arsenal on Saturday but a club spokesperson said today: "Martin's our manager and there are no plans tomeet anyone else.
"It is inaccurate to speculate game-bygame. Martin has not had the start he would have wished but he wants to turns things around."
Tottenham play Anorthosis Famagusta on Thursday in the first round of the UEFA Cup, the competition that galvanised the club last season and helped them recover from a similarly poor start to their Premier League campaign.
They then play away at Bolton in the Premier League on Sunday knowing a win could lift them back into mid-table and back in contention to earn a place in the top six.
But Jol's relationship with striker Jermain Defoe remains under scrutiny amid reports he won't pick the England international unless he signs a new contract.
Defoe, who has two years left on his current deal, was left out of the squad against Arsenal despite being fully fit.
