Squeaker the orphan fawn hits the bottle

This tiny fawn is being nursed back to health after poachers shot dead his mother.

Squeaker, as he has been named, was found beside his mother's body the day after she was shot.

Walker Dawn Veal discovered the severely dehydrated roe fawn in woods near her home in Langtree, North Devon.

She contacted North Devon Animal Ambulance, whose volunteers are now using a diet of sheep's milk to build up the strength of the fawn, who is just under a fortnight old.

"Squeaker was very dehydrated and needed intensive care," said animal ambulance spokeswoman Diana Lewis.

A fawn - but not Squeaker who was found beside his mother's body the day after she was shot

"We have been giving him lots and lots of sheep's milk, which seems to have got him back on his feet. He is doing very well now."

She added that he was given his name because he "squeak, squeak, squeaks for attention the whole time".

He will be moved to a Somerset animal rescue centre in coming weeks to be fully weaned before his release back into the wild in six months.

Mrs Lewis said of the poacher who shot Squeaker's mother: "It was not only illegal, it was very cruel.

"Female deer have young at this time of year and hunting is prohibited because of that."
