Star Wars exhibition featuring hundreds of film props lands in London

County Hall in Westminster has hosted its fair share of intimidating characters over the years but few have been as menacing as Darth Vader.

From tomorrow, the Star Wars baddie will be striding through the former corridors of power with Jedi, robots and aliens as part of a major exhibition.

The show features more than 280 props, costumes and models from all six Star Wars films

The show features more than 280 props, costumes and models from all six Star Wars films, borrowed from the Lucasfilm archive in the US.

Star exhibits include Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder hovercraft and a dress worn by Natalie Portman in her role as Queen Amidala. There will also be a life- size Naboo N- 1 Starfighter and interactive games, with visitors invited to wield a light sabre under the guidance of a Jedi knight.

Tabitha Totah of Lucasfilm said: "We're celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first film and it seemed appropriate that all six films were represented in the exhibition."

The show runs until 1 September and there will be extra events in July when a 30th birthday party will be held at the ExCel centre. Some of the stars from the films will be there, although no names are yet confirmed.

The first Star Wars film, featuring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Sir Alec Guinness, opened on 25 May 1977 in 32 cinemas in the US. Its backer, 20th Century Fox, was so convinced it would be a disaster it came close to selling its stake just before its debut. But it proved a massive hit and won six Oscars. It opened in Britain in December that year.

Although the Star Wars films, written and directed by George Lucas, have been overtaken in the popularity stakes by the Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter and Pirates Of The Caribbean franchises, the fourth Star Wars epic, The Phantom Menace, remains in the top 10 highest-grossing films in the UK.

The exhibition will be open seven days a week, with tickets priced at £16.50 for adults and £12.50 for children.
