State school wins first Team of the Month award

Andrew Bordiss, Deputy Editor of the Evening Standard, said: "We are delighted to confirm that the first Team of the Month, sponsored by Canterbury of New Zealand for October 2007, is Isleworth and Syon School for Boys.
"We chose them because they have performed creditably with a series of early-season wins to become the leading state school in a league dominated by independent schools. The team was eventually overpowered by an impressive St Paul's in the Daily Mail Cup last week, but this shouldn't detract from a fine effort made by all the lads and their coach Mark Adams, who is enthusiastically encouraging the development of rugby at Isleworth and Syon.
"The Standard league is topped by unbeaten St Benedict's, and other strong contenders for our first award included Epsom College, Merchant Taylors', Mill Hill and Halliford.

"Isleworth and Syon will receive special Evening Standard/Canterbury rugby training shirts in recognition of their achievement. We are very pleased to be working with Canterbury of New Zealand, who have decided to sponsor Team of the Month this season, and with SchoolsSports.com, who have been instrumental in driving this initiative forward with the Evening Standard".
Joe Middleton, chief executive of Canterbury of New Zealand, said: "We are proud to be the main sponsor of the Evening Standard Super 1st XV Schools League Team of the Month run in association with www.SchoolsSports.com.
"It is an exciting development, which is in line with our commitment to supporting sport at all levels. Congratulations to Isleworth and Syon School for Boys in being the first winners."
