Also in the shoulder bag were credit cards, passports and flight tickets belonging to Sri Lankan tourist Suranganie Joseph and her two grown-up children.
The holidaymakers had been shopping in south London before boarding a Northern line train at Tooting Bec.
At Leicester Square they intended to change on to a Piccadilly line train to head to friends at Hounslow. It was then Mrs Joseph, 57, realised she no longer had the bag.
Mrs Joseph could not remember when she last had the bag but Leicester Square station supervisor Bob Khaira, 45, scrolled through pictures on the digital camera of Mrs Joseph's daughter Avindra, 24, to find out the bag was with them on the Northern line.
He contacted several dozen stations on the line and found that the bag had been handed in at Woodside Park by an unidentified passenger.
Mrs Joseph said: "I think London Underground staff are excellent. Our holiday would have been completely ruined if it had not been for Bob tracking it down and the other station supervisor at Woodside Park.
"My whole life was in that bag. I am going to write to the High Commission for Sri Lanka and tell them just how good London Underground is."
Mr Khaira said: "Mrs Joseph was so upset. I felt sorry for her and it would have been terrible for the family if we had not been able to find the bag."
A LU spokeswoman said: "We don't know who handed the bag in - we would like him or her to come forward so we can add our thanks."
