Strauss facing nervous wait as Test axe looms

Andrew Strauss could this week become the latest member of England's 2005 Ashes winners to fall by the wayside.

A year ago, Strauss was in a neck-and-neck race with Andrew Flintoff to lead the Test team to Australia. But now the Middlesex opener's place on the tour of Sri Lanka next month is far from certain.

Strauss has gone 25 innings without a Test century and, despite being handed another central contract, is a borderline selection for a squad to be announced on Friday.

Marcus Trescothick, Simon Jones, Ashley Giles and Geraint Jones have left since England's golden summer while Flintoff will spend this winter recovering from a fourth ankle operation.

Unlike most of those Ashes casualties, Strauss has stayed fit. But a chronic shortage of runs means he is under pressure from younger rivals Owais Shah and Ravi Bopara.

England's one-day team arrive home from Sri Lanka having lost their final match by 107 runs. Better news is that former Durham and West Indies paceman Ottis Gibson has accepted the job as full-time bowling coach.
