Street's fight to save garden turns into turf war

This was the scene as residents of a cul-de-sac in East Sheen took action against developers' plans to build over a garden.

Avenue Gardens was turfed over yesterday in protest at plans to bulldoze a Victorian house and its gardens to make way for nine homes and underground parking.

Julia Bates, chairman of the SOS Avenue Gardens campaign, said if the plans go ahead, the five flats and four houses, which she described as a "concrete nightmare", will ruin the street's aesthetic.

She said residents were concerned the Victorian garden and four large mature trees, which make up 25 per cent of the street, will disappear.

But she added that the protest day had been a big success.

She said: "It was an absolutely fantastic day, we had lots of interest from the community.

"Hopefully this will have some influence over the council's decision."

Richmond council said it will consider objections to the Grayswood Properties plan.
