Strike duo dodge fine as Wenger draws line under spat

Arsene Wenger has decided to take no disciplinary action against Emmanuel Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner for the ugly clash which marred Arsenal's Carling Cup mauling against Tottenham.

The strikers shook hands and apologised to their manager and the rest of the squad for their actions on Tuesday night when they returned to training yesterday.

Although Wenger was furious with the pair, especially Adebayor, for their conduct, he has decided not to impose internal disciplinary action and now considers the matter closed.

Standard Sport understands that the Frenchman considered the TV evidence too weak to impose a punishment - a sentiment shared by the Football Association.

The FA looked at video footage and has decided that retrospective punishment was inappropriate, although the governing body will write to both players to remind them of their responsibilities.

Adebayor does look set to miss tomorrow's FA Cup fourth-round match with Newcastle, although he has not been dropped and is only being rested ahead of Tuesday night's Premier League meeting between the two clubs.

Not that Wenger will be explaining his reasoning to the media today. The Arsenal manager has taken the highly unusual step of cancelling his weekly press briefing, doubtless to avoid questions about the controversy.

He is also understood to be angry about speculation that he has contacted other clubs about sending struggling Theo Walcott out on loan for the rest of the season, a story that club sources vehemently deny.
