Student debts may put capital out of reach for young teachers

Bright young teachers could shun London schools because they cannot afford to live in the capital and pay off student debts, according to experts.

Graduates may instead choose to take their first teaching jobs at schools in cheaper cities, a leading education charity said.

The fears have been voiced as the Government announced that students will have to pay more for a university education. They also face much higher interest rates on student loans.

James Darley, director of graduate recruitment at Teach First, said massive student debt could make budding teachers think twice about moving to the capital. The charity trains high-flying graduates as teachers and places them in "challenging" schools for about two years before they take up other, often better paid, graduate careers.

English teacher Samuel McCormick, 22, is on his first year of the Teach First scheme at the Harris Academy in Purley. He is about £20,000 in debt after studying politics and philosophy at York university.

He said: "I grew up in the country so I wanted to move to London for a change, but I can see that other people might want to live outside London if they have so much debt."
